Town hall, one of the busiest, thronged and gridlocked retail regions of Coimbatore is where the goddess Koniamman residing over many centuries.History of this temple reveals the dawn of city’s name Coimbatore.Centuries back, Irula a minnow ethnic group lead by Covan ruled a hamlet Covanpudur that was named after him. He built a temple in 13th century to guard his tribes and everyone started to worship it. Later Illangosar tribes reigned this place after the demise of Irula, fortified the area and erected a temple enshrined with deity Koniamman to shield from Cherans.

Years rolled when a King of Mysore dynasty found ravaged temple, revamped it and sanctified Koniamman in the avatar Mahishasuramardhani.As centuries past the Cowan ruled village Covanpudur transformed into Coimbatore and the temple also enshrined with the idols of Subramanya with his consorts Valli and Deivanai, Panchmuka Vinayaka and Navagraha. Chariot festival, Thiruvilakku pooja, Vasantha utsavam and Theppam utsavam among the major festival of this shrine.
