Palani is a town in Dindigul district known for the temple of Tamil god lord Murugan. The temple is built atop a hill called as Sivagiri at about 1500 feet above sea level. It can be reached at a distance of 100 Km from Coimbatore and 60 Km from Dindigul. Palani hill temple is the 3rd of 6 main Murugan temples (in Tamil - Arupadai Veedu) worshiped in South India.

It is believed that the avatar of Palani Murugan deity known as Dandayudhapani Swamiwas created by Siddar Bhogar by the amalgam of nine minerals (Navabashana) during 3000 B.C. Thai Poosam, Panguniutthiram, Kandha sasthi are the main festival of this pilgrimage temple which attracts countless pious devotees every year.Pilgrims can reach the hilltop by walking on barefoot on Elephant path or 697-stepped path or Haulage winch from the base.
